Prepare Your Motorcycle for Winter

As outdoor temperatures continue to drop and the weather becomes more dangerous, it might be time to start preparing your motorcycle for storage. If you live in an area that isn't too affected by harsh winter weather, you may be able to enjoy winter rides just fine. However, if your area experiences extreme winter weather, your safest bet is to give your motorcycle a break until the weather warms up. Nortoil LLC in Plant City has some useful tips to help you store your motorcycle efficiently this winter.

Wash Your Motorcycle

Even though your motorcycle is going to be in storage for various months, it is important that you give it a nice wash before putting it away. Cleaning your motorcycle will help you remove water spots and other stains that could cause corrosion even when its stationary.  After washing your motorcycle, ensure that it drys completely and that there is no left over moisture in tough to reach spaces. The biggest concern during storage is keeping moisture off your motorcycle, so finish off the wash with a good wax. This will offer a protective coat on your motorcycle that will prevent rust and corrosion from forming.

Change Your Motorcycle's Oil

Before storing your motorcycle, replace the oil in it and change the oil filter. Your old oil will be broken down after being used all season long. It's a lot better for your motorcycle to count on fresh oil, even when it's in storage. Having fresh oil in your motorcycle will also be more convenient once spring arrives. You won't have to worry about changing your oil before finally being able to take your bike out for a spin.

Take Care of Your Battery

If you keep your battery hooked up to your motorcycle while it's stored, it can cause your battery to lose its charge. To prevent this from happening, you can remove your battery from your motorcycle. Another convenient way to prevent your battery from discharging while in storage is by hooking up to a charger with a tender. Your battery will stay charged and a tender will avoid overcharging it. Don't forget to check the cables and connections for rust and corrosion. It's a good idea to grease them a bit to prevent moisture from building up on them during the months it's in storage. Inspect Your Tires

Before storing, check your motorcycle's tire pressure. Fill your tires up to about the maximum pressure recommended for your specific model. This will help prevent under inflated tires as the temperatures drop. Your best bet is to store your motorcycle on a stand to avoid having it stand on its tires for months. If you aren't using a stand you will have to rotate your tires every once in a while to prevent flats spots from forming on your tires.

Add Fuel Stabilizer

While your motorcycle is not in use, your fuel tank can begin to rust, especially if it's low on fuel. Unused fuel can turn gummy in the gas tank because of the low temperatures and lack of use. To prevent this from happening, add fuel stabilizer to your gas tank. How much fuel stabilizer you will need for your motorcycle depends on the type of fuel stabilizer you use. Take your motorcycle for a short ride after adding the fuel stabilizer in order to mix the two and have it run through your fuel system.

Wrap Your Motorcycle

To find the best storage space for your motorcycle, look for a heated indoor space, either in your garage or a storage facility. If this isn't possible, your next best option is an indoor space that will protect it from the elements. Invest in a breathable cover designed for your motorcycle to keep it wrapped up and away from moisture all winter long. Don't forget to plug the exhaust pipe to prevent small critters from making a home out of your motorcycle.
